The following is a sonnet by my sister Joanie. It was borne of her wrestling with faith and gendered stereotypes of God. I am, immensely proud of my little sister and am so grateful that she gave me permission to post it here.
Once Imagined, Twice Conceived
You wandered in a garden lush and fair,
And lo, a voice compelled you, "Take and eat."
Then trusting words, you ate. How did you dare?
Was faith or lack of faith your great defeat?
Ashamed then clothed you left eternal bliss,
Were known and named by one; your very own.
Imagined second, now your name is this:
The mother of all children born of groans.
And groan on groan your daughter's pains increase,
Till one young girl groans out a Word made flesh.
Enclothed in flesh this Word gives birth to peace.
Imagine such reversal from a creche!
From babe to mother setting daughters free,
Our second Eve has come in victory!
