Freud's Last Session
A Review of a Film About a Hypothetical Conversation Between Lewis and Freud
My brother Paul is a professor of psychology and practices therapy in the psychoanalytic tradition, predominantly as a Lacanian, and I am (among other things) a C.S. Lewis Nerd and scholar. So when Paul sent me the trailer to Freud’s Last Session a movie about a hypothetical (and technically possible) meeting between Freud and Lewis we knew we would have to review it.
Our review (the film is now streaming on Amazon and other places) has just been published by The Other Journal and I hope you will consider reading it. To summarize the review briefly, we appreciated the film, and were moved by how well the story explores what it can look like to disagree across difference while focusing on humanizing rather than dehumanizing one’s interlocutor. This is a film that we (especially the “we” of American Christianity) deeply need in this moment and I hope that it will be appreciated.
